Personal history: McCain's father and grandfather were both U.S. Navy admirals. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross after his release as a POW in Vietnam. McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982. In 1986, he won the U.S. Senate seat vacated by retiring Sen. Barry Goldwater.
